Reading a CPI Release Without the Headline Rush
By David Menon
Macro releases reward patience more than speed. Before scanning commentary, anchor the print against the prior revision column — surprises often live there rather than in the headline percentage.
Second, separate what moved from what you wish had moved. Core measures exist because volatility exists; naming the basket slice that dominated is more honest than a clever metaphor.
Finally, place uncertainty up front. A tight interval that ignores seasonal adjustment choices is a polite fiction. Clients prefer a shorter memo that admits one known blind spot over a longer one that pretends omniscience.
